[Update of 2019-04-11: Brexit postponed to 2019-10-31]

With the withdrawal of United Kingdom from the European Union, the European Commission took a radical step regarding UK based domain names owners.

Why?

The .eu is the official Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTld) of European Union and registrations are reserved to people/organization based this area. As UK will no longer be a part of the European Union the European commission has made the decision to revoke UK inhabitants’ rights on the .eu tld.

If nothing has changed before march 30, 273.000 domain names and maybe yours might be concerned by this decision. Some of the main consequences of the Brexit for .eu holders based in UK might be the loss of their websites, their emails and we go further the scratch of their SEO. Indeed, the time spent on ranking their .eu domain names might be lost with their websites, and they will need to restart their efforts with a new domain in order to rebuild their SEO strategy.

Currently United Kingdom are in talks with the European Commission regarding their withdrawal terms. There are two possibles outcomes :

  • If UK leaves the EU on 03/30/2019 with no agreement.

As of 03/30/2019: People based in UK will no longer be able to register .eu domain names or to renew it.

From 03/30/2019 to 05/30/2019: Period during which people will can modify their contact information in accordance with Eurid’ requirements.

As of 05/03/2019: Domain names for which information hasn’t been updated will be withdrawn. They will be removed from Eurid’ zone file and will they no longer support activities, thus site and emails will be unavailable. Domains remain eligible for a reactivation the registrant fulfill the condition within the next 12 months period.

As of 03/30/2019: Domain names removed from the zone file will be revoked and will go back into public availability.

  • If UK leaves the EU on 03/30/2019 following the transitional period defined by the Withdrawal agreement.

As of 01/01/2021: People based in UK will no longer be able to register .eu domain names or to renew it.

From 01//2021 to 03/02/2020: Period during which people will can modify their contact information in accordance with Eurid’ requirements.

As of 03/02/2021: Domain names for which information hasn’t been updated will be withdrawn. They will be removed from Eurid’ zone file and will they no longer support activities, thus site and emails will be unavailable. Domains remain eligible for a reactivation the registrant fulfill the condition within the next 12 months period.

As of 01/01/2022: Domain names removed from the zone file will be revoked and will go back into public availability.
